Interesting thought :o) I'm currently reading two older novels dealing with the medical field in the 1920's and wouldn't you know it, the (almost) same concept is brought up in both books. Meaning, A. J. Cronin, the author, describes the drawbacks of individual medical egos versus the benefits of shared knowledge and learning/working together.
Methinks that it's invaluable, or maybe even the only truly useful way, for the advancement of any art or science that passionate artists/scientists work together under the leadership of someone who's not only thoroughly knowledgeable but also gifted in drawing out the best from others without being hampered by or hampering them with ego.

The problem with this is probably that most folks do have a serious (and quite human) hankering for recognition, and sharing freely rather than guarding closely for one's own advancement tends to water down said recognition. It's hard to jump up and down and holler "look at me! look at me!! See how great I am!!!" when your greatest achievement is to be working as part of a group to advance your particular art or science as a whole.
