After dipping our toes into the tai chi pool last summer, Sibylle and I have been looking for some physical exercise to improve our overall body tone and fitness. Quite by accident, during a conversation with a work acquaintance, I discovered the name of a personal trainer and fitness professional, who teaches hatha flow yoga [...]

Narrow Corridor
Posted in health on Feb 7th, 2008
As the image to the right shows, the layout of the different focal areas on a progressive lens introduce some interesting geometry into the lenses structure. In an effort to produce a lens that mimics natural, un-corrected vision, without lines, the optimal corridor of vision can be rather small. Not to mention the size of [...]
Progressive Isn’t Always Better
Posted in health on Feb 6th, 2008
This afternoon, after two weeks of anticipation, I picked up my new glasses. The frames and lens shape and size fit my face perfectly. Both Sibylle and I are very pleased with how they look. Unfortunately i am finding it hard to see through them.
Because I needed astigmatism correction as well as [...]
Progressive Lenses

At my eye exam yesterday I learned that my vision does in fact need some help. Moreover, I learned that my astigmatism has returned. Here’s my prescription:

The “OD” and “OS” indicate the eye. OD is an abbreviation for oculus dexter, which is Latin for right eye. OS is an abbreviation for [...]
Eyes, Two Years Later
Posted in health on Jan 23rd, 2008
Almost two years ago, in March 2006, I had LASIK surgery done to my eyes to eliminate the need to wear bifocal glasses any more. The goal was to allow me to see without corrective lens whether I was reading a book, looking at a computer monitor, or driving the car. Given my [...]
The uptime command, in the UNIX world, displays how long a particular machine has been “up” or running. Recently I have been applying that term to my daily lower back exercises. After reading a getting things done article that talked about Jerry Seinfeld, I have been working on better uptime for my exercises.
I’ll explain.
Jerry said [...]
In the last fourteen months I have administered roughly 770 insulin shots. Our cat, Nekko, is diabetic and as such requires twice daily shots to survive.
At first I wasn’t very good at giving her the shots. The terribly brief instruction I was given, before brining her home from the hospital, did nothing to [...]
Pfannkuchen
Posted in health on Nov 3rd, 2007
This morning for frühstück we had Pfannkuchen, or German style pancakes. The recipe was a little thinner than Sibylle remember from her childhood, but the flavor was right, and we both enjoyed them.
6 eggs
1 Cup flour
1 Cup milk
1/2 Cup sugar (although next time we’ll try 1/4 Cup sugar)
butter
(I actually only used 5 eggs, as [...]
Fifty-Five
Posted in health on Aug 19th, 2007
This morning when I got on the scale my weight was 195.2. I’ve now lost fifty-five pounds. 55. Fünfundfünfzig.
That’s eleven 5-pound sacks of potatoes. It’s five 10-pound sacks with a 5-pounder thrown in for good measure. It’s a seven year-old child.
What is truly amazing about that number is that I carried it around [...]
Shedding Weight
Posted in health on Aug 8th, 2007
Since the beginning of August my weight has consistently been under 200 pounds. Moreover, for the past six days now it has been under 198; with a new low of 197.2 this morning.
Recently I started actively tracking my eating habits again, to see how much I was consuming in a day, and to show [...]
