This morning while reading an article about someones set up, I stumbled across a Safari plug-in called “Inquisitor.” It purports to be an enhancement to the built-in search field in the Safari window. I was intrigued enough that I downloaded and installed the plug-in within minutes.
My joy at new software was short-lived, however. [...]

Nearly five years after first purchasing a couple of Macintosh computers (largely due to OS X) I find myself “switching” again. As a software architect I spend considerable amounts of my work day developing models and diagrams using proprietary tools that only work on the Windows operating system. Two years ago, when I [...]

Over the weekend I installed Mac OS X release 10.4 on my two Macintoshes. Overall the experience was a good one. Apple includes a nice “archive and install” option that makes a copy of the current OS installation just in case. Selecting this option also enables the more important, in my estimation, “preserve users and [...]

Om Malik has started a new meme, this time about freeware or shareware Mac applications “that have helped you get the most out of your Mac.”
Here’s my list:
X-Pad: A notepad with state. No files to save or open, just type and it is saved for you. As an incorrigible note taker this gem has saved [...]

The transition is on. Apple is switching to Intel chips, with new hardware expected in the marketplace by this time next year. Their flagship development product XCode will produce “universal binary” capable of working on either PPC or Intel chips.
Those applications that don’t easily re-compile will make use of a “dynamic binary translator” in order [...]

In ten or so years of personal computer ownership I have upgraded operating systems, office productivity tools, development environments, and a host of other applications large and small.
I’ve survived OS/2 Warp and it’s 20 plus diskettes, and made the hike up through Windows 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98, 2000, and XP Professional. I made detours along [...]

This week marks the one year anniversary of our switch from Windows to Macintosh. Michele and I ventured into the Apple store in St. Louis on January 11, 2003 and haven’t looked back ever since.
She is very satisfied with her 17″ iMac and I love my 15″ Titanium PowerBook. Within days of getting the new [...]

Ever since switching over to Macintosh last January I have thoroughly enjoyed using Safari as my primary browser. My only complaint is Safari’s inability to view PDF files inline.
Thanks to Schubert it and the PDF Browser that complaint is now happily removed.
This browser plugin makes viewing PDF files served on the Internet easy once again.

I have to say that I am very impressed. At home I have my Powerbook plugged into a KDS Visual Sensations 19″ monitor. The OS immediately recognized the monitor and the settings it was capable of supporting. The OS also immediately setup a multiple monitor desktop. Just like that. How very cool.
As I write this [...]

Okay, it has been just over a week since Michele and I took the Apple plunge by purchasing a Powerbook G4 and 17 inch wide screen iMac. Michele was able to transfer all her files and leave her Windows ME machine behind in just a couple of days. I managed to convert and transfer my [...]
