As a student in American classrooms in the 1960s and 1970s I was introduced to the metric system in a failed attempt to join the world standard. (That the United States is one of but three countries on the planet that doesn’t use the metric system speaks volumes.) Personally, I think the reason the metric [...]

Fifty-Five
Posted in health on Aug 19th, 2007
This morning when I got on the scale my weight was 195.2. I’ve now lost fifty-five pounds. 55. Fünfundfünfzig.
That’s eleven 5-pound sacks of potatoes. It’s five 10-pound sacks with a 5-pounder thrown in for good measure. It’s a seven year-old child.
What is truly amazing about that number is that I carried it around [...]
Shedding Weight
Posted in health on Aug 8th, 2007
Since the beginning of August my weight has consistently been under 200 pounds. Moreover, for the past six days now it has been under 198; with a new low of 197.2 this morning.
Recently I started actively tracking my eating habits again, to see how much I was consuming in a day, and to show [...]
A Weighty Matter
Posted in health on Jun 14th, 2007
Just over a year ago, on June 12th, I bought a bathroom scale and started tracking my weight. I weighted 250 pounds on any given day, and I wanted to weigh less. A lot less.
I had seen a blog entry about something loosely referred to as the “hacker’s diet.” Not really a [...]
Nearly eleven months after I set out to lose weight I have not only lost 50 pounds but managed to keep it off. As a result many of my work clothes no longer fit. I can still wear them, but I am swimming inside of them now. At my peak weight I [...]
Five Under Two Hundred
Posted in health on Apr 10th, 2007
For several weeks now my morning weight has been hovering between two hundred and two oh five. I’ve been eating a bit more than I was previously, and I am not currently engaged in a weekly workout regimen. The “eat less, do more” weight loss only works if you in fact eat [...]
One Ninety Nine

I have reached a milestone in my effort to lose some weight. This morning the bathroom scale read 199.8. Less than two hundred pounds. I honestly can’t remember when it was that I crossed two hundred going the other direction, but I think it was while I was still active with martial arts in the [...]
The Flattening Curve
Posted in health on Dec 12th, 2006
Since starting to lose weight in June, the graph of my daily weight has maintained a steady downward trend. There are flat spots in the plotted curve here and there, but the overall trend is downward. That is until recently.
I’ve stopped participating in kendo and the lack of “do more” (the DM part of Eat [...]
Two-oh-eight
Posted in health on Oct 23rd, 2006
I have finally crossed the forty pound barrier and entered into the single digits above two hundred pounds. When I originally altered my eating habits I was hoping that in a year’s time I would lose fifty pounds and once again be under two hundred. That I am just eight pounds away from that goal [...]
Seven Bags Full

The next time you are in your local grocery store, head on over to the back of the produce section, where they keep the potatoes. Grab, all at once, seven five-pound bags of any kind of potato.
Yes, seven five-pound bags.
That is how much weight I’ve lost since the beginning of June. To say thirty-five pounds [...]
